Superocean

In 1957 Willy Breitling, the then owner and director of the brand, presented the SuperOcean diver’s watch. After conquering the sky (Navitimer) and the land (Premier) the Swiss watchmaker from St. Imier went on to master the depths of the ocean. Today the brand even has two model ranges drawing from this iconic 1950s model – the Superocean and the Superocean Heritage.

At present, SuperOcean is now a purely diving collection with watches resistant to up to 300 meters of water column. The line has been redesigned for 2022 and we see models for women with a 36 mm case diameter and for men with sizes 42, 44, 46 mm. All models are powered by automatic movements and are available on a steel tension, rubber or fabric NATO strap, Outerknown Econyl, made ecologically from the waste (fishing nets) left on the ocean floor by fishermen.

Two Breitling references from 1957, the three-hands SuperOcean 1004 and the SuperOcean 807 chronograph, were able to withstand the pressure of a 200-metre water column (20 bars) which only two other models from competing brands were able to achieve at the time. Compared to the competition, however, the SuperOceans made a less bulky impression. The reverse panda-style (white subdials contrasting with a main black dial) chronograph became a bestseller almost immediately after its introduction.

Collection highlight

Without question, the 42 a 44 mm Superocean Automatic models are the collection’s highlight. The version featuring a black dial and a unidirectional rotating bezel rendered in the same colour tops the charts followed by the dark blue model. Apart from the price, what makes these practical watches very appealing is the high measure of water-resistance. This means that alongside swimming and surfing this watch can be worn when deep-sea diving.
