The large date display in the twin apertures has its forebear in the monumental digital “five-minute” stage clock that the brand’s founder, Ferdinand Adolph Lange, helped to construct in the auditorium of the Semperoper opera house in Dresden. The Lange 1 is available with either a hand-wound movement or an automatic Daymatic calibre. The two are easily distinguished – the automatic version is literally the mirror-image of the original watch, so its date aperture is not on the right, but is left of centre at the ten position. The Lange 1 Daymatic delights with a retrograde day-of-the-week indication instead of the original’s power reserve indicator.
